Opportunities
for Outreach Ministries
Social Ministry
Chairman: George Duhigg
The Social Ministry Sub-Committee of the Service and Outreach Ministry
Team sponsors events and outreach
projects that enrich the lives of congregation members by helping
others. The committee organizes and works to engage others in
these special events and projects. Some of the events are in tune
with specific one-time needs. Other projects have been long-standing
ministries of our church and represent an ongoing and persistent
presence in Social Ministry.
Check the Upcoming Events page for information on current and
upcoming social ministry projects. Here are some examples of events
sponsored by the committee:
St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen
The committee sponsors
several days each year at the St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen in
Scranton. The kitchen provides solid noon-time meals for dozens
of needy people. Our involvement includes a cash donation to the
kitchen along with volunteer help in preparing, serving and cleaning
up after the meal. The volunteer aspect involves only 3 hours
of easy effort for four to six people. This is a long-standing
commitment by the church and represents a terrific and tangable
opportunity to help others.
Meals-On-Wheels
Trinity delivers for Meals-On-Wheels
every Thursday. This is a significant and ongoing project that
can always benefit from additional help.
Parish Health Ministry Program
A special steering committee works with the Parish Health Ministry
Coordinator, Carol Pencek, to further
develop, expand, and refine the program.
Ugly Quilt Project
Trinity is a major contributor and supporter of the Ugly Quilt
Organization, based in Hop Bottom, PA. This nationwide organization
collects materials and assembles "Ugly Quilts" or sleeping bags
for the homeless. These attractive-in-their-own-way bags are bundled and
delivered by the Ugly Quilt project to shelters in New York City (and
other cities nationwide). The Trinity Parish House acts as a collection
point for ugly quilt raw materials: old blankets, ties for tying the
bundles, and any other cloth item that can be made into filling. One of
our members, Harriet Milhiem, supports the Ugly Quilt project by knitting
hats. Harriet, a resident of Elan Gardens Assisted Living Home, is in
constant need of yarn and our congregation happily supports her efforts
and dedication through yarn donations.
Healthy Communities•Healthy Youth
The local incarnation of this national effort has strong support by our
congregation. The HC•HY effort involves activities that cross and link
academic, sports, religious and community programs towards developing and
supporting youth and community assets. Additional information will be
provided in the future through links to other sites.
Special
Benevolence
Chairman: Sam Lesko
Trinity Lutheran church regularly receives donations
from members of the Congregation to provide financial support
to various individuals and/or programs in-need. A Special Benevolence
Committee consisting of three members of Church Council evaluates
all requests for assistance. Requests for assistance can be submitted
to Pastor Mathews or the chairman of the Special Benevolence
Sub-Committee.
